Power Yoga is a general term used in the West to describe a vigorous, fitness-based approach to Vinyasa style Yoga. The term came into common usage in the mid 1990s, in an attempt to make Ashtanga Yoga more accessible to western students, though, unlike Ashtanga, Power Yoga does not follow a set series of poses, so classes can vary widely.

The workout, experienced during Power Yoga, is intense and utilises the entire body. To hold the series of poses in this type of Yoga session, the practitioner has to use muscles in his arms, shoulders, back, legs, feet, and abdomen, which tone and strengthen these muscles. Due to the fact that an integral part of practicing Power Yoga is stretching and breathing exercises, the practitioner increases overall flexibility.
Power Yoga and Vinyasa Yoga are generic terms that may refer to any type of vigorous Yoga exercises derived from Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga. Though Power Yoga classes can vary widely from teacher to teacher, they will most likely appeal to people who are already quite fit and enjoy exercising. Prepare to work hard and work up a sweat.
